The Confederate Treasury issued almost $2 billion worth of Treasury Notes during its short life. This was manifested by almost 85 million individual notes, with denominations ranging from 50 cents to $1,000.
There were 70 different notes issued by the Confederate Treasury across seven Issues (approved by Acts of Congress) between 1861 and 1865. There are also 2 'essay' notes which are the subject of much discussion.
These 72 notes have been documented in increasing detail over the last century by numismatic legends including William West Bradbeer, Dr, Philip Chase, Dr. Douglas Ball, Grover Criswell jr, and more recently, Pierre Fricke.
The culmination of all this research has greatly extended and animated the original work undertaken by Raphael Thian. Collectors now have access to extensive information and graphic images of every type of Confederate note, and the many sub-varieties that have been discovered.
The research has also unearthed many errors in the original research which is not surprising given the manual intensity of Thian's labors.
